SAFE SPACE POLICY
Please read carefully the terms and conditions applied to any residential or training weekend.
At UK Playshop, we are committed to creating safe, inclusive and welcoming spaces that are free from judgement, harassment and discrimination, and where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
We acknowledge that the world of musical creativity and sharing in which we operate is a creative arena and that freedom of expression and human connection is at the essence of what we do. We also acknowledge that meeting others and stepping up in this way can bring up emotions and vulnerabilities. While we believe we must all be free to express ourselves, it is unacceptable to exacerbate or reinforce discriminatory or harmful behaviours or views. Our expectation is that the content and work shared in our spaces is done so with care and without malicious intent.
We all play a role in maintaining and growing a welcoming space for our community, and with that in mind we ask that you read and acknowledge the following code of conduct in full when engaging in the UK Playshop to help us keep the spaces safe for every participant.
Who is this policy for?
This policy applies but is not limited to the following: the organising team, facilitator team, performers and participants. This policy is included as part of our terms & conditions when purchasing tickets. It sets out what you can expect from UK Playshops and what you commit to as part of the UK Playshop.
To ensure that all attendees feel comfortable and respected, we have implemented the following Safe Space Policy:
1. Respect: We expect all participants to treat each other with respect and kindness. This includes respecting each other's boundaries, experiences, and identities.
2. Non-Discrimination: Discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated at our event. This includes discrimination based on race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, class or any other characteristic. This includes workshop time as well as in social spaces between sessions.
3. Consent: Consent is paramount in all interactions. Drum Circle Facilitation can blend with other practices and include movement/touch. It is also a space where subject matter is created on the spot. Before sharing touch or discussing sensitive topics with someone, ask if they are comfortable with that. Participants must obtain explicit consent before initiating any form of interaction that may affect another person's comfort level. Don’t assume your physical & emotional boundaries are the same as other people’s.
4. Be aware of your privileges: including less obvious or invisible hierarchies. Think about how your words, opinions and feelings are influenced and who they might exclude or harm. Be aware of equality of musical space and allow space for all drummers to express themselves.
5. Accountability: If anyone witnesses or experiences behaviour that goes against this Safe Space Policy, we encourage them to speak up and report it to the designated support person(s) of the events. We are committed to addressing concerns and taking appropriate action to ensure the safety of all participants, including removing the perpetrator from the rest of the programme if necessary, without refund.
6. Support: We are committed to providing support to anyone who feels uncomfortable or unsafe during the event. Designated support person(s) are available to assist with any issues that may arise.
By participating in UK Playshop events, you agree to abide by this Safe Space Policy and contribute to creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere for all attendees. Together, we can foster a community that celebrates diversity, creativity, and mutual respect.
If you have any questions or concerns about this policy, please don't hesitate to contact the team.
Thank you for helping us create a safe and welcoming space for musical empowerment.
love from
The UK Playshop team.
